Reconstructions

My last year in highschool I found myself without an art teacher. Since the rest of the students saw this as an opportunity not to go to the painting studio, I found myself in there a lot.

Working with scrps and garbage materials, I began merging sculptural elements with abstract, highly physical painting styles. These pieces exist in that vague line where sculpture and painting meet.

Not only do these pieces attempt to reconstruct notions of home and safety that were much more informal and precarious, much like the landscapes of my childhood in Rio de Janeiro, but they also became documents of, or windows into primitive and urgent aspects of my "self" or being".

In retrospect, they are the evidence of a naíve yet commited attempt remap two "homes" so distant, reconcile torn identites, and much more.
